Exactly, Jon. I only started teaching gigs 10 yrs ago. My classes are like the cardio version of art and all about technique. I got a 'do what you feel' theoretical art degree in the 70s. It took years to cough up that kool aid and learn both my craft and how to support myself doing it. Fifty years of work, study and practice doing freelance commercial (stage sets, murals, portraits, etc) and my own studio art later I'm a decent, successful—measured in life satisfaction rather than fame or money—narrative painter. The arts are crucial for creative thinking, but the way it has been taught in this country (or not taught) is a heartbreaking study of elitist graft. Your list looks like a savvy generation is finally catching on.
