The Faux Louvre series grew as I added paintings inspired by sketching trips to more and more museums. The best thing about this concept was I got to study masterpieces of art history in great art museums across the US write off my travel. A trip back to Europe wasn’t in the budget, but besides New York and Chicago there are major collections in DC, Boston, Philadelphia and LA. Best (and easiest) of all were the Palace of the Legion of Honor and the DeYoung in San Francisco. Both mounted incredible special exhibits, and regularly scheduled every version of any impressionist theme show you could desire.

I amassed 800 sketches as the years went by, and never got bored. Every painting was a bright new window into history. I didn’t set out to copy the old masters, but discovered a colorful, affordable way to re-gift them, and the fanciful frames took them over the top. — From Chapter 14
