My Amazing, Immortal Mother—First Quarter/Nineteen Years pg43
Colorful companion to my memoir The Incompetent Psychic
As a young woman Joan was Rosie the Riveter, a nurse and a cowgirl. During two weeks every summer she vacationed on a dude ranch in central British Columbia to help with cattle round-ups on fast horses. In a picture of her from that time she was smiling the best smile of her life. — From Chapter 2
Events conspired to kick start this book I had been wanting to write since 1995 (when a competent psychic told me it was in the cards). Five years after my mother transitioned to a better place, I painted this from a favorite old photo when Joan was her happiest and most vibrant self.
For so much of my life I found fault with my mother’s often off-putting behavior. Good lord but she could embarass us. Doing this painting helped me to finally and fully appreciate her fearless strength, loyalty, devotion to duty and goofy humor. This portrait is a tribute to her beauty. Writing a memoir revealed so much I missed by not acknowledging Joan as she deserved. Heroic moms like Joan deserved to be immortalized and have their best stories told.
Yippee ki yay Joan! I am hoping there are horses in heaven.
