Oh No 2020

Las Vegas, Nevada 1973.

Mostly to show my mother I wasn’t a slut, I went ahead with my unholy plan. At eighteen I married him in a church of the latter day saints in a dress I made myself.

A young man can only get high in a garage for so long before venturing out for additional distractions. Disdaining his job or any intention of higher education, Kory focused his attention on me. He stalked his wife. I would come out of the biology lecture hall to find him in a trash-can kicking frenzy. He had seen me talking to a male student in the next seat. I was told to quit my job. He was surreptitiously watching, and didn’t like the way the boss looked at me when I turned around. I refused and was probably punished, only it was hard to tell because all that year is fuzzy. — From Chapter 2

There is no surviving artwork from this time. I had learned batik wax techniques in high school and was doing a lot of embroidery, so the fabric patterns I created, sewed into clothes and embellished are long gone.

To distract myself last winter (to avoid writing an unhappy story of a dismal decision to marry a despot at eighteen), I did this pencil sketch that pretty much sums up that year of my first really big mistake. Even that young I comprehended a bad husband can only get worse and got out of it pretty quickly.
