Primary Choices c1980

My mother dropped us off for our flight to Honduras, and headed back for Walnut Creek in my Pinto Wagon full of plants and student artwork. I had never caught the college spirit and didn’t bother to stay for the graduation ceremony.

Tony and I arrived in the capital of Honduras to air so thick with moisture that all the fence posts along every road had sprouted back into trees. We rode a taxi well decorated with day-go stickers into the city, and arrived at the compound of Cornell archaeology students where I was unwelcome. Tony hadn’t informed anyone he would be brining a girlfriend, much less one so far below their Ivy League.

To escape their miasma of snide, I changed into the customary summer clothing of my culture — shorts and a tube top — and went to see the sights. After a block, little boys were following me yelling, “Puta! Puta!” (“Whore! Whore!”) I was enthusiastically unwelcome both inside and out. Plan B was much better. — From Chapter 4

The doodle of this chapter heading was in the same large sketchpad as the drawing on the cover. Again I have to guess the date. I may have been taught the concepts of archiving and provenance while getting an art degree, but it took another decade before…
