Next time someone says, “Small world!”, I’ll suggest they try the non-stop polar route from Paris to SFO in coach. I woke up and stared out the plane window halfway across, watching the featureless, blazing ice of the tundra — stark endless white gesso of the world’s largest blank canvas. Faint lines appeared that revealed themselves to be roads. Brought up the ‘Where are you now?’ video map. It was North Battleford in northern Saskatchewan.
I was seeing my father’s old family homestead and rapeseed farm in winter. All of the butt-numbing, neck-kinking airplane discomfort vanished under a powerful wave of gratitude to be coming from where I had just been, and going to where I was headed. If I had been born to the wrong Buchanan brother, I would be stuck down there.
