I didn't like being a child. Other children were vicious little conformists and dissatisfied consumers. They didn't like me, either. Graduating from art school in the 70s I knew I couldn't be both a mother and successful painter. Fine with me. In my 30s that biological 'need to breed' feeling hit. I borrowed a friend's 2 year old for one hour. I even liked the kid, but that's all it took to understand at every level the unrelenting attention they require. That fast I was cured. Over time I've reiterated every point in this article to explain why me being childless is good for everyone. Funny thing... more often I'm met with envy rather than condemnation. Oh, and I'm still enjoying a 40+ year vocation as a freelance artist, illustrator & writer.

Seeking sunnier landscapes I left Woodstock NY for Tucson where I'll teach painting & finish a scifi novel. Images are my originals. Links at mernie.com
