Dogs are Magic & Love in Fur Suits — UNLV pg72
Colorful companion to my memoir The Incompetent Psychic
1976
We would drive up to Tahoe to visit Stella’s nutso cousin Hank in Kings Beach. Some other friends driving though to California showed up at Hanks with an adorable young rat terrier. He had jumped into their car at a grocery store parking lot in Elko to hitch a ride west. After an hour’s fruitless search for his owner they gave up and let him ride with them. The tiny beast hopped up on Stella’s lap and kissed her chin. She looked at me and demanded, “Can we keep him?”
“Sure.” The happy, hairy little imp had kissed my chin, too, and there was no saying no. So Elko moved into our no-bedroom apartment and filled it with joy. — From Chapter 3
There are indications that the great big eternal spirit of love that was condensed into Elko is the same spirit who is now animating my chihuahua Faun 45 years later. Faun has been my only source of cuddle hugs during this Reign of Covid, and I’m also pretty sure she functioned as a muse to dictate her part in this memoir. In scenes on the Other Side she is part elf, and one of my Spirit Guides. My theory is that our guardian angels do us amazing favors, and jump in and be our companions as pets when we need it. Faun insists she is a minor deity. I humor her.
